Tobacco causes serious health, social, economic and ecological damage in Germany and worldwide. In Germany alone, around 127,000 people die prematurely every year as a result of tobacco consumption – this corresponds to 13% of all deaths. Smoking is therefore the greatest preventable health risk and the most common preventable cause of death in Germany. In addition, there are enormous costs to society as a whole of around 97 billion euros a year and far-reaching ecological damage in the tobacco supply chain (deforestation, water pollution, CO2 emissions, discarded cigarette butts, etc.).
